Danny Tenaglia
Since his debut album Hard & Soul in 1995 and his subsequent dance compilations
such as “Can Your Pussy Do The Dog?,” “Mix This Pussy,” “Gag Me with a Tune” and
“Color Me Danny,” Tenaglia, more than any other DJ, has defined the tribal sound
that has dominated gay clubs for the last decade. His brilliant remixes include
work for Madonna, Grace Jones, New Order, the Pet Shop Boys, Cher and Blondie.
The difference between Danny and the world’s reigning #1 DJ, Tiesto, is that
Tenaglia cares more about the sound and music than about media coverage or
accolades. Before his recent appearance at Toronto’s Boa, Tenaglia was asked by
several promoters to spin in Toronto (one was even willing to build a DJ booth
specially for Tenaglia for the one-off party). He sent sound experts from New
York to check out all the spaces and decided where to play not on the basis of
who would pay him the most but of which space sounded the best. This media-shy
producer/remixer is best known for being a marathon DJ. He doesn’t like opening
DJs and instead will regularly spin for 10 to 15 hours by himself. He rarely
spins outside of New York, but when he does, it is considered the ultimate club
event. He recently shocked many of his fans by posting a “thank you” letter to
Toronto on Tribe’s popular on-line message board. He stated that there is no
such thing as a #1 DJ because God is #1 and went on to say that Toronto is one
of the few cities that truly appreciates music. He is spinning at the Industry
Be Yourself party, on Sunday, October 10, at The Docks.
