Cardiff nightclub X to re-open this weekend

Cardiff nightspot Club X is to re-open this Saturday, following weeks of on-going speculation about its future.

The Charles Street venue was one of the most well-known gay venues in the UK, until its unexpected closure in May.

Over the years it suffered a number of set-backs including an arson attack which resulted in a huge blaze that destroyed a large part of the club.

It featured in the1999 film Human Traffic, staring John Simm and Danny Dyer, which revolved around five twenty-something devotees of the club scene.

Club X originally opened in the early 1990s to replace the equally well-known gay venue Tunnel, and over the initial years grew from strength to strength, regularly attracting capacity crowds and weekend visitors from as far-afield as Newcastle.

Now, the new owners aim to re-create the old style glory days that made Club X one of the most well known gay clubs in the country.

Saturday’s opening night features a set by dj Boy George who will take to the decks at about 1am. Over the coming weeks the new owners plan to bring some of the top names to the city centre venue.

“Our aim is to re-create the exciting old days the club was most famous for,” said a club spokesman. “It is a gay club for gay people and their friends and this policy will be strictly enforced at the door.”

The club is currently undergoing a face-lift in time for Saturday’s opening. It will feature four different zones, namely a dance zone, for which Club X is most famous, a camp bar, chill out area and an extensive beer garden.

Club X will open Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer, and also Wednesday nights when students return in the autumn.
